SolidWorks Tech Tip: Do you ever create variables & link dimensions to them?

This is a great way to build an automation within SolidWorks 3D CAD software.  What do you do when you want to rename the variable?  It seems like it was designed  to edit the variable name within the edit equations dialog box to change variable “X” to “X2”, but doing this will unlink all of your dimensions previously linked to “X”.  Then you will have to re-link all of your dimensions back to” X2″. This could be because the equation dialog box is actually deleting “X” & then creating a new variable called “X2”.

What we noticed is if you go to one of your dimensions already linked to “X” & rename the dimension, this will truly rename the variable!  All other dimensions also previously linked to “X” will now be linked to “X2”!  A dimension can be renamed by simply selecting the dimension, & changing the name in the property manager under the Primary Value section. I hope you find that this saves you a lot of time as I know it has saved us.
